Extrinsic plastic hardening of polymer thin films in flat punch indentation

چکیده

Confined geometries offer useful and experimentally amenable mechanical testing arrangements in which to study the molecular micro-structural processes govern plastic yield stress environments dominated by hydrostatic pressure over shear. However, changes macroscopic strain behaviour that result from switching an unconfined mode such as uniaxial compression a confined one are often overlooked display surprising level of complexity, even for simple elastic constitutive models. Here we report confinement induced hardening effect polystyrene thin films achieved through repeated loading with cylindrical flat punch whose diameter is many times initial film thickness. This high aspect ratio combines constraint provided material surrounding contact generate state indented region, rendering deformation dimensional. By into domain, achieve 66% increase stress, 0.3 GPa 0.5 GPa. Through finite element simulation analytic modelling principal stresses strains, show this arises not intrinsic structure material, but rather residual imparted during loading. We contrast glassy physical ageing thermal cross-linking.

Indentation measurements on thin films

Thin films have an important part to play in modern technology. It is difficult to characterize the mechanical properties of thin films because the films cannot usually be investigated separately from the substrate. One of the few methods that can be used for such investigations consists in making an indentation in the film by applying an extremely small and accurately controlled force while at...

Substrate effects on indentation plastic zone development in thin soft films

Plastic zone evolution in Al–2 wt% Si metal films on silicon and sapphire substrates was studied using nanoindentation and atomic force microscopy (AFM). AFM was used to measure the extent of plastic pileup, which is a measure of the plastic zone radius in the film. It was found that the plastic zone size develops in a self-similar fashion with increasing indenter penetration when normalized by...

Dewetting of thin polymer films.

We study the dewetting of thin polymer films deposited on slippery substrate. Recent experiments on these systems have revealed many unexpected features. We develop here a model that takes into account the rheological properties of polymer melts, focussing on two dewetting geometries (the receding of a straight edge, and the opening of a hole). We show that the friction law associated with the ...

Thermodynamics of Flat Thin Liquid Films

The two main themes of this study aim to resolve conflicting results in the literature regarding the thermodynamics of flat (uniform thickness) thin liquid films. One of the themes concerns the augmented Young equation, which is a condition for mechanical equilibrium. Two different expressions for the augmented Young equation have appeared in the literature. It is shown that under certain assum...

Deformation field heterogeneity in punch indentation.

Plastic heterogeneity in indentation is fundamental for understanding mechanics of hardness testing and impression-based deformation processing methods. The heterogeneous deformation underlying plane-strain indentation was investigated in plastic loading of copper by a flat punch. Deformation parameters were measured, in situ, by tracking the motion of asperities in high-speed optical imaging. ...
